Poor heron. Got dive bombed by a Kingfisher and then chased away by two adult Pied Stilts (which were 'protecting' two juveniles).
Managed to grab a few bites before it left (photo 3).
Male at rest on Coprosma leaf. They fly actively in the evening but are hard to see on the wing. At rest, when seen from above, resembles a bird dropping containing a seed.
Flying at night with sumptuous magnificence.

The mysterious blob! Just saw one washed up. I took some closeups of the structures in my aquarium. It looks like eggs to me. I'll try to see if anything grows/hatches.

Small freshwater stream by the native beech forest.
Definitely a new species. Entirely subterannean in habits, seemingly very restricted in range and only found on forested mountains in Marin and Sonoma county. Probably fairly sensitive to development and habitat disturbance.
