I was talking with Adrian Paterson in my office when, to our huge surprise, this painted lady butterfly(European Small Tortoiseshell!!!) flew in through my open window. I've only seen three of these butterflies before in Canterbury, and never in the winter. Very odd!

I have another story to tell on this series of images. We left our camp just after 6 AM and about 1/2 mile from camp found a lioness in a tree with a male lion camped out at the base of the tree. The lioness did not look very comfortable, but she seemed to try to do her best to find a comfortable position. After 20 or 30 minutes she finally came down to the ground. There was still very little light and I had not been using a fast shutter speed while the lioness was in the tree. If I had known what was about to happen I could have made adjustments, but I failed to anticipate the action. When the female came out of the tree she started to walk away. The male came up behind her and tried to mount her. She wheeled away and snarled and roared at the male (image 6). The male kept coming at her and she launched at him and we had about 15 seconds of a roaring, raging battle. Most of the lions we had seen the previous week or so had been snoozing, etc., and we never heard a sound from them....but here was roaring that seemed to shake our vehicle...we were only 40 or so feet away from this pair. The 20th Century Fox roaring lion on the beginnings of movies is a wimp at roaring compared to the display by these two. I have included the shots I took of this encounter, but they are not sharp since my shutter speed was only 1/200 second....but you will be able to see the action. Finally the male backed off....and slunk away dejected.

This guy was just a wee red blob, but I knew it was something interesting from previous observations from up north :-)

The last image has a scale (mm and 1/2 mm divisions), the bell is about 4mm high.

It can curl up its tentacles so they are just little knobs, which it does when swimming. It can then unfurl those tentacles and drift with them extended.

Observed in the parking lot of the Shipyard and Titanic Rock formations near Tumbler Ridge, BC, Canada.

No one had seen a fox all day. We'd finished our hike and were eating our lunches. I dropped a container of nuts which spilt out.

I picked it up, turned and this vixen was creeping up to get the spilt food.

Clearly habituated to people and used to being fed. It must have been waiting in hiding till the sound of a dropping container alerted it to come out and check.

@jacqui-nz highlighted for me these that were found down on the west coast at Karekare and wondered if they had been spotted at Otaipango - Henderson Bay. Seeing as these were spotted on the west coast I figured that the best place to find these were the Tohe - 90 Mile Beach and as I was going there that day, I kept an eye out for them and found them.

The photos that I have taken are mainly of ones still alive. I choose these photos as they highlight different parts of the animal - although somewhat blurry.

They are under 10mm in diameter, usually around 5 - 7mm. I also observed them swimming by closing the bottom and opening it, similar to how a jellyfish swims.

As we do not have an ID yet for this obs with it being a true jellyfish or maybe a Hydrozoa decided to go with Cnidarians initially as that encompases both Hydrozoa and Scyphozoa.

So here are a few more photos @clinton that may help with an ID or a difinitive class, if these in fact are the same that @jacqui-nz highlighted for me :)

Last photo (have to click the view all) shows them as blobs on the beach.

The location name is not accurate - Reason

This clown doris was practicing it's acrobatic skills using a piece of seaweed as the rope.

While I was watching the show and taking photos a cray swam by giving me a slap with it's tail.

I had to make a decision to try and find the cray lurking in the seaweed, knowing those nippers would be out, or carry on watching the show. As it was not lunchtime, I carried on watching the arial acrobatics of the clown doris :)

Second time I have seen a clown doris and a cray - I wonder if that is a coincidence or if they like hanging out together *LOL*

Show was performed in the shallow subtidal zone on a rock face shaded by seaweeds.

Totally stoked to spot this little beauty as I was wandering back home.

It was grazing on common coraline out of the water in the mid intertidal zone. After a couple of photos that had big drips on them I moved it into the water on the common coraline so I could get better photos. Once it realised that it was safe, it carried on grazing.

Amazing day today - 3 different nudibranch species :)
