Common along a portion of Meola Creek - one of two major infestations that I know of in northern New Zealand (the other is Lake Pupuke). Plants almost completely choking a slowly flowing stream (up to 3 m deep but usually 1-1.5 m deep) shaded by crack willow (Salix fragilis). I have never seen plants at this site flowering or fruiting - these plants have long been called V. spiralis and V. gigantea - two species which are not present in New Zealand.

Sticta c.f. fuliginoides.

Corticolous. Cyanobacterial. Thallus reeking of rotting fish when moist; monophyllous, lobulate, lobes and lobules rounded, margins shortly but prominently ciliate; upper surface wrinkled, chartaceous, orange-brown to dirty brown, with blackened minute, terete, coralloid isidia; undersides pale brown to whitish, cyphellate, cyphellae large.

Uncommon. Specimens fit here better than they do the usual variation seen in S. fuliginosa (i.e. within New Zealand) on the basis of the extremely lobulate apices and their ciliate margins - though cilia not as long as I have seen in the only other specimens of this species I have seen in this country. Sticta c.f. fuliginoides was only seen at this one location during our survey. Sticta fuliginosa is also present in the general area but unusually for that species in New Zealand, also uncommon - see https://inaturalist.nz/observations/38287940 for comparison.

For examples of Sticta fuliginoides confirmed by DNA sequence data see https://inaturalist.nz/observations/1336809 and https://inaturalist.nz/observations/12078415

Hebe stricta var. egmontiana (Cockayne), L.B.Moore.

Common shrub throughout mountain particularly in subalpine vegetation extending into Chionochloa dominated tussock grass land.

This is one of three tetraploid units within Hebe stricta (the type species in this complex is diploid). Hebe stricta var. egmontiana is linked to var. lata (also tetraploid) and I believe both should be merged and treated at species rank, due to their widespread sympatry with diploid Hebe stricta (var. stricta).

Although described from Taranaki Mounga, Hebe stricta var. egmontiana is not endemic to that peak, identical plants occur on the Central Volcanic Plateau and associated volcanic peaks, they then extend into the eastern greywacke ranges where they merge in the broader-leaved var. lata.
