This is posted for historical purposes to record the species' former range in NW Oregon's Willamette Valley. I found this photo in a McMinnville newspaper's archive. It shows a decapitated Northern Pacific Rattlesnake killed in the Amity Hills during the summer of 1957. It's probably the last verified native Crotalus in Yamhill County prior to total extermination there.

This one was really pink and peachy. At some angles it looked the normal brown color, but the pink belly was always clearly visible. Not sure what the deal is here, but I definitely want to catch this guy next time for better insight. I obscured the location due to the sensitivity of this particular snake, and it was with six other Northern Watersnakes and a Northern Black Racer, so I will probably obscure they as well for the time being.

Around 5pm today in the middle of the road. Large 3ft or more snake. Hisisng, loud, almost like a rattle noise. But no tail rattle. Defensive while I kept distance. Aggressive. Never took its eyes off me. Opened mouth often. No teeth. Black eyes. Black tongue. Large center. Moments prior a large barred owl flew past my windshield and watched me as I approached snake. An epic moment in my day. I was going to pick up my son who was with a native medicine woman.

How much is that "doggy" - er... RATTLER in the window? lol! Juvenile from snake response call, basking next to the mailbox of an Orthodontist's office in a downtown strip mall. I was amazed to see this little guy here, as the only potential "habitat" (using the term loosely) was a strip of grass beneath a small powerline bordering the parking lot about 100 feet away. Gerry Salmon said "these things are everywhere down here", and he wasn't kidding! Gerry and I bagged him up and relocated him in his own best interests (and everyone else's). : )

Talk about a great start to the field season! Observed near "Ace's Place" - "hallowed ground" in the NJ Pine Barrens once frequented by the legendary Herpetologist Carl Kauffeld himself, with his adventures in this particular area lovingly detailed in his excellent 1957 work "Snakes and Snake Hunting" in Chapter 3, "Memories of Mount Misery" - a "must read" for any Field Herpetologist worth his/her "scales"! County record! Vicinity of Manchester Township, NJ. "Black" Rat Snakes ("Elaphe obsoleta obsoleta") are virtually unknown from the Pine Barrens proper, known only from the fringes of the region and the Inner Coastal Plain in South Jersey. I've sought (and found, haha!) the herpetofauna of the Barrens for more than 45 years, and this 53" gravid female "Black" Rat was the LAST species I thought I'd run into on my first adventure there of the season! A truly awesome day in the field with fellow Herpetologists Pete Danch (@jdanch) and Tianqi Huang.
