More details:

  • I used a razor blade and plastic tweezers for dissection
  • Some photos are with my Samsung S9 cell phone camera, others with my Olympus and a 60mm macro lens. (Next time I'll switch to a diff lens to get better pics.)
  • Microscopic views are at 40x. I tried to get 100x images of the mites, but I'll need to find a way to separate them from the gall for next time.
  • Microscopic images are taken with my cell phone held up to the microscope eye piece. Not the best solution, but it worked for a first try. I've requested a SEM for Christmas. ;)
  • Video is taken the same way as the microscopic still images. Note that the lens on lens caused distortion, and the camera tries to auto-focus as well. Things I'll try to find a better solution to for next time.

Many damselflies were moulting on these pillars making up the jetty into Four Springs Lake. This one looked like one of the more mature ones, with saturated colours.

This is high up on one of the dunes in Archer on the northeast coast of Socotra.

This was the only one of its species here, and it has survived change in a way that’s quite remarkable. For one this place is sandblasted for months, during which this is not a place even for humans. Then there is the lack of water, and the hot sun.

Perhaps the most remarkable is that it has been completely buried for months, and still been able to thrive! Now it is in the open and is flowering, and hopefully it will be able to produce seeds that will germinate.

For plants to survive in a desert, they need to get to the water whenever it’s available, and thus grow very long roots. Here the wind has revealed what looks like long tentacles, and in a way they are as without them the plant would die.

Collin spotted this one, thereby adding another Triteleia to my life list. My key distinguishes this from T. ixioides (which I've seen in the Sierra but which apparently grows in the Coast Ranges as well) based on color (boo), tube length (double boo), and the shape of the filaments, which should be "lobed" in T. ixioides and unlobed in T. lugens. Looking at my photo, the filaments looked pretty lobed to me, until I did some photo comparisons and realized that the lobes on T. ixioides are big projections, not just rounded edges like I was thinking. Pictures: 1. Words: 0.
