There were hundreds of grasshoppers in a large patch along the trail from the clay island trailhead. I know it's possible for different sexes and ages to be different colors, so I included observations of the different variations in case they are different. I would expect them to be the same species to gather like this but I know other animals will gather in mixed species groups for various reasons.

Wee little babes in the garden! Only a few mm long. Possibly first instar of Schistocerca nitens? I did see a S. nitens that looked to be ovipositing in our yard a while back and their first instar is supposed to be bright green. Sorry, cell phone photos are not that great.
