These snakes are so cryptic with a forest-floor background, I've been looking right at one without seeing it before (until it moved). Simply incredible.
Looked to be only a foot or so long, slowly moved off the trail.

swam away, fatly. was trying to get some sun in the middle of hte river on a cloudy day. as we floated past, we spooked it. she couldn't swim below the water due to a bulging stomach above the vent.
The Cottonmouth.
This is one of the few venomous snakes in Missouri. Although Cottonmouths are typically found around slow-moving streams and marshes, there are some populations that persist around cold, fast-moving streams in SW Missouri.
