Purple martins have returned.

So glad to see them earlier. Last year they didn't appear until June. Praying that this year they have a more successful brood.

The only hitch for now is that starlings are trying to lay claim onto the martin houses so I regularly check them to make sure there are no invasive species taking up residence.

Saw the first ribbon snake in a while.

It was slithering through the tall grass after the rain had floodes a nice portion of the refuge.

Strong rain last night. And hummingbirds are still here.

I'm surprised as they've never stayed this long.

Found a deceased coot.

I thought it was a pigeon but the feet were the tell-tale sign it was a coot.

Ouchie!!!

Just had a ruby-throat chase another into my window. Now window strike but the poor little girl had her beak stuck in the screen and the other kept aggressively attacking her. Luckily it was only for a second and she got out.

Still here

My hummingbirds are still here. They're getting nutrients more from the flowers than the feeders.

Catbird Sighting @ 9:17am

Saw a catbird at the back part job. Sadly, no access to my Nikon. I thought it was a mockingbird until I realized that it was too dark.

New bird

Walking through Forsythe Recreation Area and I surprised a bird twice before I lost sight of it. It was very small and reminded me of a wren. I am hoping it is a marsh wren.

Lepidoptera Heaven today.

Took a trip to D'Arbonne NWR and I was in absolute awe. There were so many Lepidoptera members there today that it was overwhelming. They included the following: cloudless sulphur, clouded sulphur, possibly an orange sulphur, giant swallowtail, eastern tiger swallowtail, spicebush swallowtail, fiery skipper and silver-spotted skipper butterflies everywhere. It was heavenly.

I had never seen so many butterflies like that, some of them feeding on the same flowers. It really gave me some ideas for my gardening next spring. The flowers they were drawn to the most were Liatris. Not a bad idea to consider them for nest year.

A close one.

Poor little guy/gal was almost involved in a bad accident. I was mowing the yard and something bolted right after I mowed near my Rose of Sharon. Luckily, it was unharmed. Took the Nikon out to get a few shots and then I scared it out of the yard to keep it out of harm's way.
