End of Observations - Hong Kong Inter-School City Nature Challenge

Dear All,

This is a little update on what's happening!

Observations for this competition will stop at midnight tonight (8th Nov, HK Time).
We are truly amazed by the response we've had!

Now, they will have 5 days to add an identification to their observations and to 'tidy up' their projects then I will do the final Observations, Species and Observers count.

I have told the teachers that it would help the iNaturalist community if their students added some sort of ID to their pictures, especially to those that have no ID yet e.g. 'Insect', 'Bird' 'Beetle' in the 'What did you see?' section. We would really appreciate it if you could continue IDing these observations whenever you can. :)

I have also asked them to delete the following:
1) Domestic Animals e.g. Dogs, Cats,
2) Selfies
3) Indoor potted plants (including greenhouse plants).
4) Small outdoor potted plants

For plants, I have mentioned that a good rule would be to look at the observation and ask 'Is this part of the urban habitat?' 'Does this plant interact with other organisms?'. If the answer is No, then it must be deleted. They know that I, and other iNaturalist users, can not delete these pictures, only the Observer can.

I have also stressed the importance of iNaturalist as a fantastic database of global biodiversity and we all have a responsibility to make sure that this database remains valid and relevant, otherwise the database will be diluted. I'm sure many of our participants will do their best.

For all of you that have spent your time and energy offering IDs for our students competing in this challenge, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks. We never expected this many observations (a HUGE understatement!!!) or observers yet I'm sure that some of the comments and IDs that you have given will empower some of our participants to continue this journey.

Thankyou.

DAY 1 - Hong Kong Inter-School City Nature Challenge

Dear All,

Firstly, thank you so much for the positive messages of support for this competition. We've had a great first day and we're actually on course to beat Hong Kong's totals for the City Nature Challenge last April!

As mentioned before, a big part of this project is to nurture student's awareness, engagement and enthusiasm for Hong Kong's amazing biodiversity and to help them contribute to our growing urban biodiversity database. There may inevitably be (and there have been!!!!) pictures of poor quality, inaccurate identifications and maybe even the odd selfie (!!!) yet, if you wish to leave a comment for them, please be constructive, encouraging and positive. For example: That's a great pic! Keep Going! Next time, try zooming in a little bit more, it would really help us to identify it!.

They more they know, the more they will care.

Also, please join the Hong Kong Inter-School City Nature Challenge project and help our students!

Thankyou!
Shaun

Hong Kong Inter-School City Nature Challenge

Dear All,

I have tagged you as you are the top 100 identifiers for the Hong Kong territory....and we need your help!

Following on from Hong Kong's amazing success in the City Nature Challenge, we have organised a similar competition focussing on Hong Kong's secondary schools. Between 5th and 8th November, students from over 25 secondary schools will be making observations of nature around their school campuses on iNaturalist and they will need your help to offer identifications.

A big part of this project is to nurture student's awareness, engagement and enthusiasm for Hong Kong's amazing biodiversity and to help them contribute to our growing urban biodiversity database. There may inevitably be pictures of poor quality (and maybe even the odd selfie!!!) yet, if you wish to leave a comment for them, please be constructive and positive.

Please join the Hong Kong Inter-School City Nature Challenge project and help our students!

If they know more, they will care more.

Thankyou!
Shaun

City Nature Challenge 2018: Hong Kong - Identification Party

Dear All,

Only a month to go and, once again, until the City Nature Challenge! It's shaping up to be a great 4 days and we really appreciate the energy and effort that will (hopefully) put Hong Kong's amazing biodiversity on the global stage. Please join the 'City Nature Challenge 2018: Hong Kong' project if you haven't already done so!

Main Website: www.citynaturechallenge.org
Facebook Event Page: www.facebook.com/events/1638558882876275/
CNC-HK iNat Project: www.inaturalist.org/projects/city-nature-challenge-2018-hong-kong

The dates of the competition are from April 27-30th. In the three days afterwards (May 1st-3rd), we have time to sort through the observations; weed out any inappropriate ones (mainly my job) and identify the ones that are left as much as we can.

The main organisers have suggested that each city hold an 'Identification Party' so that we can make it a fun experience (!) and less laborious. Many of you have mentioned that you could lend a hand with identification and, again, I really appreciate any time that you spend on this. WWF-HK have kindly lent us their meeting room at their Central offices on May 2nd.

If you wish to 'join the party!' and meet other iNat users and representatives of local biodiversity organisations and institutions, please let us know by registering, letting us know when you may come and how long you can stay for.

Date: Wednesday 2nd May, 2018
Time 10am-6pm
Venue: WWF Central Offices, 1 Tramway Path, Central
Registration: https://goo.gl/forms/BzDmVf7eyN46ktPq1
Refreshments: Food and Drinks provided.

Also, if you intend to help with identification but are UNABLE to come to this party, please let me know also. When the CNC is over, I wish to give credit where it is due.

As always, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Cheers!
Shaun

City Nature Challenge 2018: Hong Kong

Hi All,

This is a little reminder about the ‘City Nature Challenge 2018’. We hope you can all take part!

Hong Kong has entered a competition with over 65 cities worldwide and all participants have to do is take photographs of nature (trees, plants, insects, birds, fungi, fish, reptiles, rocky shore/mangrove sps etc) and upload them onto iNaturalist. The CNC will be judged on the number of observations, number of species identified, and number of participants

This is great for you and other iNat users as you will be involved in a worldwide project to increase engagement with nature! This is great for Hong Kong as it showcases our amazing biodiversity, increases the ecological record and fulfils many of the aspects of the Hong Kong Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan.

Plus.….we want to win!!.

I'm tagging you because you're one of the top observers/identifiers in Hong Kong, and we'd love your help with the City Nature Challenge! The project encompasses ALL of Hong Kong (waters included) and we need people out there making observations, finding species, and helping to ID the observations coming in.

WHAT TO DO & WHEN TO DO IT:

Friday 27th April - Monday 30th April

Go out and make observations for the CNC 2018 in any activity (research, data collection, nature walk, mini-bioblitz, etc) already planned. Also, please encourage students, colleagues, clients and friends to participate.

Tuesday 1st May - Thursday 3rd May

Assistance in identifying species on the iNaturalist project.

Many local organisations/institutions will be doing CNC activities during these dates and I shall advertise these on the Facebook Event page to keep you all updated. Perhaps you can join one of them! There will also be a couple "ID Parties" happening May 1-3, I'll post them looking for people to attend once they're scheduled.

Facebook Event Page: www.facebook.com/events/1638558882876275/
CNC-HK iNat Project: www.inaturalist.org/projects/city-nature-challenge-2018-hong-kong

Thanks in advance for your help with the City Nature Challenge! Feel free to write comments & tag others you'd like to see here!

Cheers!
Shaun
