These are the common dominant members found in chaparral. This plant community is characterized by tall woody shrubs that are difficult to walk through. The canopy is often closed. This is fire adapted community that is also very drought tolerant. Many plants in this community have sclerophyllous leaves that resist wilting due to their structural reinforcement of sclerenchyma cells. In many parts of California this is a climate community after fires. Chaparral is also common on south facing exposures.
