What

Red-purple Ragwort Senecio elegans

Observer

arnim

Date

October 13, 2019 07:48 AM NZDT

Description

The dune wetland area being weeded here is generally under control, but the adjacent dune has suddenly had many dozens of these pop up over the last fortnight. The 2nd photo shows one area since cleared, the 3rd an area still to be done. Sigh.

As with https://inaturalist.nz/observations/34291831, this plant complex is from time to time not visible due to sand, for weeks at a time, for instance the last month or so.

For much of the last month this and the other major clump of S.rotundifolia 5m away, were buried. Both are now mostly visible again, the vagaries of this dynamic landscape.

Having seen this go very brown over the winter it is nice to see it springing back to life. This is the only place I see this species, ie. it is not common in the dune wetlands of this coast.

This species breeds in winter, so this one is a late starter. It got nixed anyway, along with the eggs, as usual.

Banded Dotterel Charadrius bicinctus ssp. bicinctus

Observer

Date

Description

This charming male was following me around the ephemeral dune wetland for several periods during this morning's session. His female was a little more reticent. Note in the second photo he draws himself taller - he bobbed up like that every minute or so, I'm not sure what the message is supposed to be, but he was clearly not concerned about my presence plucking weeds.

The female is poorly visible in the 4th photo.

What

Brown House Spider Steatoda capensis

Observer

arnim

Date

Description

As spiderlings, S.capensis looks like Steatoda lepida (a native), but this one is old enough to be sure it is S.capensis, so it got nixed.

This resembles the Pimelea shown at

Many Pingao plants did not survive this process, but this lot seem to be doing fine.

When Council reduces the height of dunes around the beach car park, the sand was dumped in front of the dunes, where the marram promptly started to regrow. Over the next few months I'll rip the new marram out as it comes up. Must arrange for some Kowhangatara to replace it.
