Photos taken over time, not one date. Identified many years ago (probably a guess) as Cryptocarya rubra. Visiting Chilean classmate told us it was a Bellota. blogged about our confusion of its name: https://illustratedplantnut.blogspot.com/2017/04/chilean-bellota-are-nuts-edible.html

This tree was planted around 1876 after the Big House was built and when the Shinn family had a nursery. Possibly one of the samples in the San Francisco Bulletin box along with coquitos from the Chilean Wine Palm trees that resides not too far away.
UC Berkeley had a speciman from a tree from Niles. The Shinn Ranch was located in Niles, which is not a district of Fremont.

This has been identified as M. styphelioides and M. armillaris and neither look right. This was planted over 100 years ago by a nursery that imported and tested many new plants.
