Description

About 8 mm long. Shown here in apparent mimicry of a juvenile Pagurus beringanus in the shell of an unidentified Ocinebrina. Some pleustid amphipods are known to mimic a number of small gastropod snails (e.g., Carter and Behrens 1980, The Veliger 22:376-377), but I don't know if this resemblance to a hermit crab has been previously noted.

Scanned from a 35 mm slide I took in 1984.

Mature Tegula funebralis are rare at this site owing to incessant predation by abundant octopuses. In contrast Tegula eiseni, which were found by Ambrose (1984) to be only rarely consumed by Octopus bimaculatus, are abundant at Naples Point.
