Nectaring on Asclepias verticillata in a sand prairie remnant. This is an example of female Myzinums I see once in awhile. They are large, and have distinctly black wings. Their abdomen has big yellow blotches on the sides and on the first tergum the yellow goes all the way across. They are somewhat similar to both M. obscurum and M. carolinianum, but they don't really fit into either. I wonder if it might be an undescribed species? https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/15286468 and https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/9438196 - it's kind of interesting that the dates for all three observations are in the first week of August.

Nectaring on Asclepias verticillata in a sand prairie restoration area. I see lots of Tachytes wasps at this site and many come to A. verticillata flowers to sip nectar. Only a few show the partial red-orange abdomen. Perhaps it indicates an older individual. This one's wings are tattered, suggesting old age. Photos depict a single individual.

Attending what I think is a Stachys sp. flower in a sand prairie. I've been calling this flower S. hyssopifolia, but now I'm doubting that. I've posted B. fervidus more often than what it's frequency would warrant, but I feel like it visits an interesting mix of flowers, so I'm documenting that here. It's not exactly common at this site, but it's not rare either. When I figure out the flower I will come back and update this entry -- botanists are invited to examine the second image an share their opinion.

In a prairie and thicket. My impression at the time was of a very small spider wasp, but seeing the photos it reminds me of a male velvet ant perhaps and opn reflection it seemed too wimpy to be a spider wasp. Still on the small side though. To me it looks a lot like some of the photos of males of Sphaeropthalma pensylvanica, but my estimated length would be 12mm or so. The leaf is a common bracken, if that helps.

On a mossy log, part of the crown of a venerable and now gnarly black oak (Q. velutina) in and old fence row between two sandy old fields. I can't help but suspect they were watching a spider wasp hunting -- and soon after this photo was taken, taking a large spider. The photos are sequential -- the later ones are of varying quality but show these wasps (or one of them at least) attempting deposit one or more eggs on a large spider in the possession of a large black spider wasp.

A small black wasp in a barren sand blowout on a small (hot!) dune. My first impression was Tachysphex, but the black eyes seemed a bit off. Liris is similar too. Fortunately, the leg spines are visible in this photo, so that may be helpful. Very small, maybe 5 or 6mm tops. I photographed another small black wasp at the same site on the same day -- probably the same species: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/54317514

On Verbena stricta in a stand prairie restoration area. I hadn't previously photographed this species in the "Bogus Run Corridor" study area. The lunate marking isn't clearly visible in these photos, but it seems to me the other markings are sufficient in this case. Photos depict a single individual, a male I believe.

A very small all-black wasp digging at bare sand in a sand prairie and thicket. The sand isn't course, the wasp is really small - 3-4mm I guess. I'm not sure if the range is realistic, but it looks similar to T. similis. From what I could see, the eyes were black.
