Even more exciting than the Black-and-white Warbler was finding river otter tracks on the bank of the river. They're not great, but I see otter tracks so seldom I couldn't resist photographing them.

This photo shows a right rear foot on the right side of the photo. See the far removed thumb pad print just above the 5 on the ruler.

I was excited to find this male Black-and-white Warbler, which is a rare bird here in the winter. It turns out this same bird had been found on the monthly bird survey on the previous day.

This bird fooled me. I called it a Common Grackle based on the seemingly shorter tail and bronze-black body and wings. But these were tricks of the angle and low morning light. When it and may others took off we could see the long tail and more uniform iridescent black plumage.

A highlight of the walk was a pair of Eastern Bluebirds hunting insects along the creek. The first photo is a female and the second and third photos are of a male. They were usually in shadow, so the blue does not appear very bright. The male finally briefly perched in a sunny spot close enough for me to take a few quick photos. You can see how much brighter it appears in good light!

Taken during the first Round Rock / Pflugerville Christmas Bird Count in the Forest North Estates neighborhood. It was a rainy day, so these were the only photos I was able to get.

This was the only bird I photographed. Barry Noret and I spotted this Red-shouldered Hawk perched in the creek bed. As we watched it flew down to capture and eat a small snake.

Counterintuitively, Great-tailed Grackles are one of the most common birds on the beach. They have taught themselves to be shorebirds an actually probe the sand with their bills. You can see the bill probing holes in some of these photos.

The key is just over 2 inches long.
