This little guy's body is about 3-4mm long. The pictures offered by iNaturalist for this species show two very different looking bugs. I selected it because the photos it offered of the bug with the spots looks just like my bug.

These plants are evident anyplace around here that isn't mowed. I'd go with horsetail, but I have never seen the brown, dry-looking thing I see in the first observations.

These two butterflies were each about an inch and a half from wingtip to wingtip. They spent quite a while fluttering around one another but never touched.
