An ok birder and former HS Science Olympiad herpetology champ who has forgotten just about everything.
General animal enthusiast.
Working on becoming an ok...butterflyer? Lepidopterist?
Constantly deceived by the true difficulty of diptera and coleoptera ID. Not deceived, but still overwhelmed by the difficulty of all the other insect orders.
Taking pictures of all the critters I can if they sit still long enough...
I mostly ID birds and common backyard mammals & herps, but sometimes add general ID for other stuff to get it unstuck from 'Unknown Purgatory'. I also like going through all the old, unidentified observations of often-mistaken ID's for species that I am comfortable with.
I generally don't ID down to subspecies unless there are obvious visual differences, or I know the geographic range and the observation is well within that range so please don't be offended if I don't match your subspecies ID - I will never disagree with those ID's for the same reason I'll never agree with them. I usually don't add comments either, unless I'm undoing something research grade, so please feel free to ask me why I've chosen a specific ID!
I keep a running list of my observations that I think are pretty straightforward ID's, but that are not research grade yet - please check it out and, if you are familiar with any of the taxa, help me confirm the ID's! You can explore those observations HERE
I would also love if folks could check out my oldest observations that have not been refined lower than family level and help me narrow it down or confirm if the ID is as good as can be!
