State Botanist of Massachusetts with the Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program. Learn more about our program, protecting numerous taxa, by viewing https://www.mass.gov/orgs/masswildlifes-natural-heritage-endangered-species-program

In the Summer of 2024 I hope to be teaching iNaturalist techniques while botanizing the Maine Coast at Eagle Hill Institute, as I did in 2022. See https://www.eaglehill.us/programs/sems-weeklong/flyers-weeklong-pdfs/2023-Wernerehl.pdf

In addition to my role as state botanist, I am also treasurer of New England Botanical Society (see www.rhodora.org). We fund a number of grants and awards for research on New England flora and maintain the NEBC Herbarium at Harvard University. Our vascular plant herbarium (NEBC) contains over 253,000 collections from the six New England states, including historic collections by Merritt Fernald, Kate Furbish, James Watson Robbins, and William Oakes. We also have a non-vascular herbarium.
