The #Anacostiabioblitz is coming up!

The Anacostia River Virtual Bioblitz is only a week away! As you saw, we will be using the #Anacostiabioblitz to generate buzz on social media, please use the hashtag and spread the word!

Carrie Seltzer from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has been a great supporter of the bioblitz and has kindly offered to lead two iNaturalist trainings this week. Last night we had a wonderful happy hour/ training session at the Steel Plate bar in Brookland (DC) with supporters of the Anacostia Watershed Society (AWS) as part of its Watershed Wednesdays happy hour series.

To get ready for the bioblitz you are invited to join biologists at the DOEE Aquatic Resources Education Center in Anacostia Park on Saturday, 09/16, from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM for a citizen scientist meet up to help document the animals, plants, and fungi of the Anacostia River Watershed!

WHAT: DOEE biologists have partnered with the Anacostia Watershed Society and fellows from the Academy for the Advancement of Sciences to offer an iNaturalist and BioBlitz introduction.

During this program, you will learn how to document your nature observations to this international database and then we will go outside and make some of our own! Learn how to recognize some of our most common insects, spiders and other arthropods and prepare to be amazed at the diversity of insect life on just a few shrub branches… in addition to all of the other organisms that call Anacostia Park home!

We will also take a moment to recognize the contributions of several stand out DOEE FrogWatch citizen scientists! If you have participated during the 2016 or 2017 seasons, we will recognize you for your time, efforts, and significant observations!

WHO: All citizen scientists and nature enthusiasts are welcome! There is no prerequisite of participation or data submission required, but we hope our active volunteers can make it! Please note that space is limited and advanced registration is required.

REGISTER TODAY! Please register to secure your spot. Participation is currently limited to 24 people.

QUESTIONS: Any questions may be directed to Rachel Gauza (DOEE; Rachel.gauza@dc.gov; 202-440-3951) or Emily Castelli (AWS; ecastelli2@anacostiaws.org; 301-699-6204 x103).

Happy Nature Watching!

It's clearly waaaaaaay too late for anyone else to show up at 10 am tomorrow, but I wanted to tag several people who are active observers in the area to make sure you've marked your calendars to explore the watershed Sept 21-24!
