time to upgrade??

iNaturalist has a little while back created the annotation "Scat"

  • Evidence of Presence : Scat
    It seems as if this annotation has stabilized and been accepted

The opportunity therefore exists to convert this project into a collections project.

To add an observation to the project will then require only that one adds the annotation, and the observation will automatically be added. If there are not scats/dung/pellets/droppings on the observation, one can click the disagree option on the annotation and it will be removed.

Apart from this not much will change. As in the past anyone can add an observation to the project (instead of adding the project, add the annotation). Except that anyone can now disagree and remove the observation from the project, and anyone can add an "agreement" supporting the annotation (but this is not crucial).
Your opinions please.

Summary:

The following have annotations but must still be added to our project (184 observations).
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?place_id=113055&term_id=22&term_value_id=25&verifiable=any&not_in_project=scats-dung-s-afr

I can run a script to add an annotation for all observations currently in our project, prior to converting .
(or - if you are inclined you can do it manually: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?place_id=113055&verifiable=any&project_id=15564&not_in_project=109104 )

Your opinions please.

Sounds good to me Tony, provided annotations are added to all current observations, as you stated.
The links above only showed me 1058 (not 1094) and 3 (not 184).. don't know what I did wrong?

The links will have changed as new data came in and as annotations are reviewed.
Specifically I reduced the 184 to those which did not allow me to add the project. So 3 sounds about correct.

Great, thank you Tony.. I added "Scats" annotation to my observations in the project.

Also sounds like a good idea to me. Simpler than adding the project. Also, the annotation is always visible hence hopefully more likely to be used. It will be good to add the annotation to all in the current project.

@tonyrebelo @magdastlucia what do we do about vomit and urine ? Im interested in studying the accumulation of hyrax urine on rocks and finding out if any life lives on the urine accumulations. Do we still use the scat annotation for urine ?

You can certainly use the project. You will need to ask admins about the annotation.

The advantage of the project is that it can allow discussion and journal articles, which the annotation cannot do.
But if everyone is happy that the annotation is OK (and if the annotation allows vomit, owl pellets, urine) then we could perhaps upgrade this project to a collections project filtered on the annotation.

Currently, votes are:

* For upgrading: 2
* Against upgrading: 0
* Uncertain: 1

Currently the situation is (links above):
In this project: 4,768 observations
Annotated "dung" but not in this project: 952 (some are bad annotations)
In this project but not annotated "dung": 2,015 observations

These last (2,015) need to be annotated before we migrate!! If you can help, please see
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/identify?quality_grade=needs_id%2Cresearch%2Ccasual&project_id=scats-dung-s-afr&verifiable=any&without_term_id=22

click on first observation to open ID tool:
Use the annotations tab,
and select Evidence of Presence = Scat. (check if it is a scat at the same time).
move to next (no need to wait).

Hi Tony,

I know we are not allowed to add annotations of life stages, where other stages are also posted, for instance I am not suppose to add juvenile to observation of Kudu with calf, or add pupa where the adult moth or larva is also included in the observation, because these wrong photos will also be selected when you search using annotations.

I think we are going to have the same problem here. I believe there is space for the old type of projects, where we have mixed photos in one observation.

I know not all observations are mixed, but maybe we should start to post scats & dung separate for this purpose.

That is a pain. Maintaining two projects is a las.

Catching up with a fresh laptop.
Run the script.
I annotate as I ID.

Do we need or already have separate annotations for owl pellets, urine, hair balls etc. I guess only a few species make recordable accumulations of urine ( like hyrax in my neck of the woods) so only these families need the annotation urine. And do only owls need the annotation owl pellets. Then what about the acts of defaecation and urination which I think all mammals do. Me more than most. Do bladders shrink with old age ? Do animals doing their duty deserve separate projects ?

Sounds good! :)
