16:30 uur - Sluiting

  • Strasbourg, 25th January: the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (the body that created the European Court of Human Rights) voted overwhelmingly to adopt a resolution calling on all its 46 member states to recognise a crime of ecocide nationally and internationally, based on a recently issued report from its Committee on Social Affairs, Health and Sustainable Development on the Environmental impact of armed conflicts. The Assembly also issued a similar recommendation to its Committee of (Foreign) Ministers.

Stop Ecocide Foundation was present at Davos 2023, co-hosting an event with the Republic of Vanuatu, for key investors, influencers and changemakers, in association with high level systems change consultants Systemiq.

The panel event, held alongside the World Economic Forum meetings, aimed to inform some of the most influential people on the planet of the inevitable approach of ecocide law... both as a necessary preventive framework to protect the future of the living world and to guide business and financial decision-making in positive ways.

    Speakers:
Dr. Christopher Bartlett, Climate Diplomacy Manager, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Vanuatu
Jeremy Oppenheim, Co-Founder and Partner, Systemiq
Jojo Mehta, Chair, Stop Ecocide Foundation

The ocean, home to myriad species and countless interdependent ecosystems, is the Earth’s greatest source of oxygen, most important regulator of weather and climate, and provides food and livelihoods for hundreds of millions of people. We have not been protecting her well, and it's time to rebalance that relationship.

This year we are launching the new Ocean for Ecocide Law network. Join us, along with organizations, businesses and communities that live and work with the ocean, in calling on governments to recognise ecocide as an essential legal protection for ocean wildlife and marine ecosystems.

What is missing to stimulate the collective change required to protect our future on this beautiful planet?

This lunchtime panel event held alongside the World Economic Forum meetings on 19th January 2023 explains how legal recognition of “ecocide” (severe and either widespread or long-term harm to nature) at the international level can create an outer-boundary guardrail, to safeguard the living world by deterring and preventing the worst harms, while leveling the playing field, stimulating innovation and stabilizing financial, operational and reputational risk.

Held in the beautiful Lan Space, upstairs at the Rätia Centre on the Promenade in Davos, Switzerland.

    Speakers:

Jojo Mehta, Co-Founder & Executive Director, Stop Ecocide International
Dr Christopher Bartlett, Climate Diplomacy Manager, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Vanuatu
    Jeremy Oppenheim, Co-Founder, SYSTEMIQ

  • The farming community and landworkers are on the front line in the effort to conserve the natural world and see at first hand the damage being done. A growing number of farmers, foresters, growers and land-based workers are taking it upon themselves to be part of the solution, adopting regenerative methods that work with nature rather than against it.

This webinar will examine how a new international crime of ecocide can strengthen existing environmental laws and safeguards, help create a level playing field for our food producers and preserve the soil and land for future generations.

    Speakers:
Jojo Mehta, Co-Founder and Executive Director, Stop Ecocide International
Ben Taylor-Davies, Bioagricologist, farmer, consultant, Nuffield Scholar and Director Oxford Farming Conference
Rob Percival, Head of Food Policy, The Soil Association, writer, campaigner and food policy expert
Paul Jackson, Organic Farmer, Slad Farm, Stroud

    Moderator:
Sue Pritchard, Chief Executive, Food, Farming and Countryside Commission

Wriggling Into Recording: 10 Years of the National Earthworm Recording Scheme
    Keiron Derek Brown
    02 Feb 2023 13:00 – 14:00

Earthworms are widely-regarded as ecologically important and recognised as ecosystem engineers (i.e. responsible for creating the habitats in which they live). However, they remain hugely under-studied and we have little species-specific information on the 31 species that inhabit the British Isles. The National Earthworm Recording Scheme aims to address this knowledge gap. This free webinar will explore how earthworm researchers are using the 20,000+ earthworm records generated over the last 10 years to improve our understanding of the ecology, behaviour, populations, distributions and habitat associations of different species of earthworm, as well as a current project to assess the provisional conservation status of all British earthworm species.

Bat Behaviour: North American Bats and White-Nose Syndrome from CPAWS Manitoba on Vimeo.

Learn about the devastating disease threatening Manitoba's bats and how you can help in this CPAWS webinar with Dr. Craig Willis.

In 2006, a microscopic fungus arrived in North America causing white-nose syndrome, a devastating fungal disease in bats, and one of the most drastic declines ever observed in an animal group.

Since then, white-nose syndrome has killed tens of millions of bats. Mortality rates reached 100 per cent in some caves. And three species are now listed as endangered in Canada, including the little brown bat, previously the most abundant and widespread bat species in North America.

Join us for a CPAWS Manitoba webinar with Dr. Craig Willis, Professor of Biology at the University of Winnipeg, whose bat lab has been studying white-nose syndrome for more than 15 years. He discusses the dangers of white-nose syndrome to Manitoba’s bats, the research being done to identify, protect, and improve critical bat habitats, and how you can get involved in monitoring bat populations in Manitoba.

    About the speaker

Dr. Craig Willis is a Professor of Biology at the University of Winnipeg who has been studying the behaviour, ecology, and physiology of bats for over 20 years. His research on bats and white-nose syndrome has been covered by a range of national and international media including CBC's 'The Current' and 'Quirks and Quarks', CTV National News, the Guardian (UK), and the Los Angeles Times.
