Lab 3 Journal Entry

On the phylogeny tree, Cosmos bipinnatus is one of the 48 species of the genus Cosmos, which is a part of the flowing plants under seed plants. It is a part of the eukaryote family and a land plant.

One adaptation that all my observations have in common are they all have bright colours to attract insects to visit so they can spread their pollen.

A unique adaptation that sunflowers have is that they have a trait called heliotropism, meaning that they face the sun all the time during the day. In the morning, the sunflower faces east, and it moves with the sun to face west at the end of the day. This is to make sure that they get the maximum amount of sun exposure. Its stem also has bristles to prevent water loss. (http://bioweb.uwlax.edu/bio203/s2008/mitchell_sara/Adaptations.htm)

Angiosperm Adaptations

All of our observations have seeds that are enclosed within an ovary (the fruit of the plant). The fruit not only protects the seeds, but also aids in their dispersal over a wide geographical range.

An interesting example of seed dispersal can be seen in burdocks, which have burrs (dried fruit with hooks) that attach to furry animals and clothing. The seeds essentially hitchhike rides to different locations.

Kashmir balsam is one of 1,136 known species belonging to the genus Impatiens, commonly referred to as "touch-me-not". Impatiens are most closely related to Hydrocera, which together make up the family Balsaminaceae.
