The UCSC Fungal Herbarium comprises thousands of specimens of mushrooms and other fungi collected primarily from coastal California, especially Santa Cruz County.
The UCSC collection is special: The collections cover our county fairly thoroughly (is that ever truly possible for fungal biodiversity?), a high percentage of the collections are accompanied by photos, and many of the collections are recent (in better shape for sequencing and re-inspection).
Additionally, microscopic data accompanies many of the collections, and more of the specimens are being worked on by a small but dedicated body of undergraduate students, graduate researchers and community members doing thesis projects, ecology research or independent studies.
A DNA sequencing project focused on the macrofungi of Santa Cruz County, California. We aim to generate an increasingly comprehensive resource for well-photographed, microscopically documented, DNA-sequenced, and vouchered mycoflora for Santa Cruz County.
