The Smooth-billed Ani is a widespread resident of scrub and forest clearings from the Caribbean and Costa Rica south to Uruguay and northern Argentina; it also occurs in south Florida, although the population there has declined significantly there in recent years. The Smooth-billed Ani is glossy black with black exposed skin around the eye and a distinctive high-arched, keel shaped bill. Smooth-billed Anis live in small flocks and eat a variety of insects, small vertebrates and fruit. These birds forage by walking on the ground or along branches, using their high-ridged bill to separate foliage in search of prey. Smooth-billed Anis also follow live stock or hover around small grass fires, catching the animals flushed by the disturbance.
