The Semipalmated Plover is a lovely, active Arctic-breeding shorebird that migrates south to the Neotropics to spend the winter. Widespread along Neotropical coasts in winter, the species is distributed from the southern US south to Argentina on the Atlantic coast and Chile on the Pacific Coast. Semipalmated Plovers are medium gray-brown above and white below with a black mask, black breastband, orange bill with black tip, and orange legs. They are often found in large, mixed flocks of shorebirds, running and pausing to pick invertebrates from the mud or sand. The species is similar to other species of sympatric "banded" plovers, but is darker above - if in doubt about the identification, listen for the species' distinctive cher-weeee calls.
