Morphology and Identification
Chondracanthus corymbiferus thalli is composed of large, flat, crisp blades that grow to be about 1 meter long and about 30 cm wide. It's blades are covered with a course hemispherical papillae about 1-2cm long. Papillae are coarse and tapering (compared to hemispherical in C. exasperatus). The blades are attached via discoid holdfast. Blades occur in clumps organized by size and age. Younger blades, as well as the basal portions of older blades, are iridescent when submerged with older blades turning yellowish-pink when in the low intertidal. The plant uniformly turns blueish red when subtidal.
