Morphology and Identification
Laminaria setchellii is a medium to dark brown alga that has a single thick blade attached to a strong and rigid stipe that often stands erect even out of the water. The stipe and the blade can reach up to 80 cm long and 25 cm wide. The blade can also be split nearly down to its base, but these splits are still one blade.

This species can often be confused with Saccharina dentigera which is only found in Alaska or Saccharina groenlandica which often has a wider growing thicker blade.
