Habitat and range 3
Ranges from Point Conception, CA to Isla San Benito, Baja California but drifted specimens have been recorded as far as Tomales Bay (Marin County). Found in deeper waters than Macrocystis pyrifera, sporophytes are typically found in 30-90 m depth (MAC).
Morphology and identification 3
Singular large pneumatocyst at the top of the stipe with with "elk horn" branching sprouting off. Each branch bears a single bullate blade with denate margins. Thallus up to 27 m.
