For the Annals of Dubious Achievements, Part 5

Today represents my 10 year anniversary of daily observations on iNaturalist. During that time I've made a bit more than 50,000 observations of more than 4000 species from three continents, eleven countries, twenty-three US states, and thirty-eight California counties.

...and, no, I'm still not entirely sure why I'm doing this.

Hi Jim,

I noticed something though. Neither of us have any observations from Kings County, California. I have tried to find a way to express it mathematically, based on square mileage, number of observations, and diversity of species.... but haven't found a good way to do it to effectively compare the natural diversity in each county. That said, it looks to me that Kings is the most difficult county in California to naturalize in. There are no refuges dedicated to wild habitats in the entire county. BLM lands on the western edge of the county are completely surrounded by private ranches, and rest of the county is entirely devoted to intensive Central Valley agriculture and towns. The only parks in the county are heavily manicured with soccer fields, playgrounds, and a few ponds full of released domestic ducks. When I go to get my 250 species there, it will likely be intensively focused on weeds, scattered birds, and the occasional mushroom growing in someone's lawn. God I love a challenge! :-)

Let me know if you want to tag team Kings County.

I would be delighted to spend some time doing Kings County together!
Lets go this spring when some things are in bloom.
