On the back of a fig leaf (don't worry about the discoloration of the leaf - source of that is known). The structure is about the size of my little finger nail, the insects tending it are minute. I do have an MP4 but it won't upload

First time I have noticed this one. About 1.3-1.4m tall so I'm guessing between 7 and 10 years old. Growing under/beside an apple tree. I suspect bird-dispersed post-quake

This has self-seeded in my fern and nettle garden. I suspect it's a native grass. Can anyone ID it for me?

We wondered whether this is urtica ferox - certainly more vicious looking than your common garden nettle!

Solitary bird, on south side of bank, in front of dairy.
Had never seen one before, knew it was not a little black shag, came home and identified it via NZ Birds Online.
Photos aren't brilliant, but bird was entirely black other than yellow bill and surrounds. A large bird about the same size as a pied shag.
There is apparently one that frequents between Avondale and Bower bridges, but this was much further upriver

Anyone able to identify this seedling? It's just popped up and I'm curious to know what it is before I (probably) dispose of it

Two fantails - 1 black, one pied

The black morph is a fledgling, one of two successfully raised. The pied is a parent. It appears both black morph chicks have made it to adulthood

The bird species is easy, but can anyone identify the fish - it's been suggested it might be a baby trout
