Never found my golf ball...and I only had my terrible phone camera on me...these asters were growing in mass along the river bank, looking very reed-like. No leaves, but definitely thorn-like branches towards the base of the plant.

I used Vascular Plants of Texas to key this out and once I got past the parts where I had no idea what they were describing, this keyed out pretty nicely. We see these along the edges of the woods at McKinney Roughs in the fall....pretty short (this one about 50 cm), look like they are struggling to get started. The leaves are rough with little "microscopic translucent, pustular-based antrorse barbs"; midstem leaves are +/- obovate and have a few teeth in the distal 1/3-1/2.
Leaf size is greatly reduced toward the top of the stem.

I noticed this grass as densely flowered and some spikelets purplish, but not quite right for Purpletop Tridens. The blades are short (approx 11 cm), glabrous with some long hairs at the throat. Spikelets are on short pedicels and appressed to the panicle branches. Panicle branches are scabrous. Spikelets on this specimen mostly ca 8-flowered. Palea are ciliate margined. The grass does not feel sticky to me, but...
Photos in the field are terrible...sorry. I added them mainly for the GPS.
