Today during my 2nd observation I was able to hear and see numbers of fantails that flew around the Earpod Wattle trees which indicated to me that they used that tree as a form of shelter. The fantails today for me were surprisingly not so chatty in the first few minutes of my observation which I believed had something to do with the cold weather. However, when I did hear them it sounded like a “tweeta tweeta tweeta” with a high pitch voice. The fantails were flying too fast around the huge trees which made it difficult for me to take a photo of it.

In the first 10 minutes of the observation I had no encounter with any bird species, I also heard moderate noises from any birds because it was not loud enough for me to classify it as a bird noise. In the last 10 minutes however, a saw one bird flying around the walnut trees which I assume was probably one of its sources of food. I was not able to take a clear picture of the bird species due to it flying around, however I did manage to take a blurry picture of the bird which looked like a blackbird judging by its colour. I managed to spot a nest high up in one of the trees surrounding the walnut trees which indicated that it’s a type of bird that prefers living close to its source of food, which is the walnut trees.

During my observation, I found a different butterfly roaming around the same area than my first observation. This butterfly is known as a Cabbage butterfly which is a white butterfly that has one or two spots on its wings depending on its gender. During the first 10 minutes of the observation, the cabbage butterfly would always fly and stop at this plant called hawksweed which seemed to be its main visiting plant preference. In the last 10 minutes, I observed it more to see if it had any other plant preference to visit. My prediction was the cabbage butterfly had no other visiting plant preference besides the hawksweed which turned out to be true.

Today on my first 20 minute observation I found and observed only 1 butterfly species maximum that I was able to see around my radius. The butterfly is known as a yellow admiral. The yellow admiral by my observation was doing nothing except sitting on a leaf from the Harakeke plant which seemed like its natural go to plant to visit. The butterfly was in its adult form and by my observations there were no caterpillars around the area. It was rare to see a yellow admiral around the area I was doing my observation because there were no host plants around or in my radius of observation. Some other plants that are in the area close to the plant the yellow admiral was on is the Tamarix aphyla and the Helictotrichon Semperrirens.
