Cortinarius c.f. rubellus-- about a dozen in a 3mx3m area, near spruce and salal. I collected two, recorded as LMRs-A and LMRs-B (companion observation)--these were then given the Mycoflora label MF33871 when labels became available. Spores and closeup of gills are from a third adjacent fruiting body, a 6-cm older one that had been trampled and which was not collected due to presence of mold (this observation).

I collected two, recorded as LMRs-A (4 cm; in moss and needle duff) and LMRs-B (21 mm with a 7-cm-long stipe, partially covered by a downed branch; in moss)--I had not yet received the Mycoflora labels. Spores and closeup of gills are from a third adjacent fruiting body, not collected (see companion observation).

Found growing by itself near huckleberry (Vaccinium ovatum) and Sitka spruce in a stand dominated by Sitka spruce. Cap diameter was 31 mm; pores did not discolor when bruised; no detectable scent. I have found the same species now at about a half dozen sites, and the size, form, and color of this one are typical of all I’ve seen (maximum diameter seen was about 58 mm). All observations have been between July and September.
The plant associations are not clear: I’ve found them with spruce (and no hemlock) and with western hemlock (and no spruce), and all but one was near huckleberry.
Spores average 15.0 by 4.8 microns (range, 13.6-16.7 by 4.3-5.3), N=66. (Mycoflora ID # 33853)
