Beautiful purplish Penstemon. I have heard that there are many species of Penstemon in Colorado and that they can hybridize, making identification difficult. I wonder if the blue color of what may be older, dried-up flowers occur on purple species or if it is a sign of hybridization between different-colored Penstemons. In any case, it is very interesting!

Second observation of this type of beetle! The first time, I saw a pair. The second time, I only saw this individual. Similar to the first observation, the beetle was initially on a Castilleja plant, perhaps supporting the possibility that Castilleja is a host for these beetles. This observation took place about 300 feet away from the first observation.

I believe this grasshopper is a “spur-throated grasshopper” based on what might be a bump or “process” on the prosternum, which would put it in the family Acrididae. I, however, know next to nothing about grasshoppers so I could be mistaken. The lower part of the hind legs is reddish-brown, or even orange, in color. Worth noting is that, in the darker images, I had to raise the exposure since it was very dark to begin with, so that may have “enhanced” the reddish color. The hind legs seem to have a chevron-like pattern, but only in texture and not really in color. There is a dark band on the head from behind the eye through about 2/3 of the pronotum.

For the flowers, I would say that the most accurate color is in the first 4 images. The lighting was a little strange which is why the some there is a slight different in color in some pictures. I am thinking these may be a type of ragwort or groundsel. The last photo shows the patch of these plants.

These plentiful yellow flowers were growing out of small patches in some high clay soil, each patch seemingly consisting of an individual plant. The stems stretched out from a little patch of long leaves. Perhaps they are small sunflowers? I am not sure. Many petals appeared “serrated,” having multiple (I think usually 3) “teeth” at the end of the petal. I find this characteristic very interesting and perhaps it may lend aid in identification.

Interestingly enough, I did not notice the green bugs (maybe grasshopper nymphs?) on the flower with the ladybug when taking the image. I only saw them when I took a closer look at the images. This observation is still for the ladybug, and not those green bugs.

I had never seen this type of flower before. A book I have suggests it is Tragopogon dubius, as does iNaturalist. However iNat also suggested Tragopogon pratensis and I will need to do more research of differentiating the two.

This goose happened to fly over while the Colorado Air National Guard was performing a flyover over Children’s Hospital. The F-16s are actually visible in the background of some of the images. Based on its size and head/bill shape, I believe it is a Canada Goose. Cackling Goose is similar, though.

This is a really interesting pair of beetles that were on the stem of an orange paintbrush flower together. They are striped with black, orange, and white. They have reddish heads. They fell off of the flower stem and landed on their sides (see third image). I wonder if they thought I was a predator and played dead. They then hopped to move underneath the paintbrushes. Different lighting in two of the images is due to accidentally using flash. One beetle was considerably larger than the other, perhaps pregnant? Maybe genus disonycha.

Saw this interesting yellow bird and grey bird! I was not quite sure whether it is a Say’s Phoebe, Brown-Crested Flycatcher, or a Dusky-Capped Flycatcher. Had a rusty underside, but also appeared quite a bright yellow while in the sunlight. When it was flying, I caught some pictures. It was fast but I thought those views might be helpful in identification!

I believe this is a very small grasshopper. Maybe a nymph. It was really small, probably about 1 centimeter in length. Its legs are quite strikingly black, contrasting strongly against the rest of the insect’s body. I recorded video and can send it to anyone if it would help in identification.
