Field Notes - Dansey Road Reserve Rotorua is virgin forest so funghi abound. This one appears to have changed orientation when the tree fell down. It was a lovely glossy almost black colour perhaps due to rain, with brilliant contrasting edges.

Additional comments? - Danse Road Reserve Rotorua is virgin forest which is carefully managed for predators. The Robins and Tomtits seemed genuinely curious about us as there were no insects for us to stir up on the zipline platform. they were not making territorial or hazard calls. They seemed calm and made very quiet twittering noises while they observed us. Field Notes - This beetle was on a vine infested with passion fruit hoppers. It has a gold metallic sheen on its carapace that does not come out in the photo. It is around 8mm long. Is this the first instar?

Field Notes - If this is a swan plant moth it is supposed to have translucent wings but you cant tell in this photo on our ceiling. We have lots of swan plants in our yard so this fellow was probably attracted by our lights at night. Wing span just over a cm

Field Notes - This looks like a common jumping spider but i was surprised that he left a trail of silk behind him on the lily leaf, perhaps as a safety line? He is bigger than average (1cm) so maybe more mature than my previous sightings. The lily was in the middle of the pond so i presume he walked across the surface to get there

Field Notes - Not common yet . I am sad to find out these asian lady birds could out-compete our lovely steel blue ones. This one came into our house.

Field Notes - This should be called the ‘Ermine’ moth. 1cm long. Presumably attracted into our house by our lights. The wing patterns are a bit like Meterana exquisita but it is too small. I didnt want to kill it so i dont know the shape of its wings. It was very reluctant to hang upside down in the jar so perhaps the markings are for camouflage?

Field Notes - Found in an orb weaver style web about 25 cm in diameter, strung between two objects about 1.5 meters off the ground. It was waiting in the centre of the web with legs furled. Spider is about 4mm long with banded legs and a chevron on the abdomen. I read that Eriophora pustulosa is very common and hugely variable in colour and markings.

Field Notes - These are very numerous around our garden. They swivel around towards small vibrations so this spider startled when the canvas moved in the wind. It constantly swivelled its body left and right and can gain a little wider field of view by tilting the thorax at an angle from the abdomen or raising it. I guess this helps to scan for potential prey. When i wave my hand over him it seems that he stops moving. Perhaps a way of avoiding detection by predators? A green fly landed about 20cm from him and he started to stalk but after landing in the vicinity a 2nd time, the fly departed.
