After providing a bounty for a pair of ravens for the last two days, a pair of coyotes found the roadkilled deer (https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/65608805) at about 7:40 last night, and spent the next two and half hours tucking in and dragging it all over the place (and eventually well out of view). Interestingly, they took turns eating, and came back to this spot through the night to pee around this spot. Also interestingly, a buck came by to investigate, about 8:30 PM, while one of the coyotes was there chowing down.

Lots of deer drama yesterday. My pup found this roadkilled youngster during a walk. I returned that evening to set a game camera and there was a doe with twins that were this same size, and she was really interested in this one, getting right up close to it, so I suppose it may have been one of triplets. And while she was trying to sniff around this dead deer, a big ol' buck was VERY interested in her, chasing her around and bleating. I'll include a terrible photo from the fading twilight of them, just because.

Lastly, the roadkilled deer appeared to have a bit of "sleigh foot" on its hind left toes. Apparently this can be caused by some sort of nutritional imbalance. The other three limbs, however, looked perfectly normal.

With all the pellets tucked away in these lodgepole thicket on the edge of dense conifer forest, I thought I might get Snowshoe Hare, but instead I got lots and lots of cottontail images. This was also right on the edge of a riparian strip and more open quarry ponds. Still fun to see cottontails perched up this leaned-over tree.

Michelle Rambo (LTBMU) sent me these documentation photos. She watched a bobcat run across Barker Pass Road with this hunk of hare in its mouth, and drop this on the other side. Pretty cool to see that they're already well into their winter whites by mid-Oct at this elevation

Surely a contender for the worst photo of the best bird I've found at Tahoe. This is a scan of an old slide. He was singing away though, and this record has been accepted by the NBRC (it was still a review species for the state back then)

Eggs are actually the first photo I took, but she didn't flush far, so I waited for her to come back. I had to crouch down in that icy water FOREVER for her to come back to the nest. She's on the nest in the other photo

First found by Don Harriman (the day before, I think, which is when I first saw it). This guy came back two winters in a row which was fun for our Big Year in 2015. It mostly stayed at the Taylor Creek roost that year. Pretty sure this is a Martin Meyers photo, but by golly I saw this bird a lot!
