Chlorophytum

Member of Agavaceae (Agave family)

"Rhizomatous, tufted perennials, either with stiff, tapering roots or long, slender roots with tuberous swellings. Leaves narrow and channelled, often fibrous at the base. Flowers in leafy racemes or panicles, usually with more than 1 at each node, on jointed pedicles, star-shaped with seperate tepals, each lasting a day. Fruit usually 3-winged. Widespread in Africa, Eurasia and the Americas, mainly tropical: plusminus 165 spp.; South Africa: 37 spp."

Trachyandra

Member of Asphodelaceae (Aloe family)

"Tufted, rhizomatous or tuberous perennials or shrublets, with wiry or swollen roots. Leaves succulent or fleshy, often surrounded at the base by tubular, membraneous or papery sheaths. Flowers star-like, white or pinkish, each lasting 1 afternoon, the stamen filaments rough or bristly. Africa, mainly winter-rainfall southern Africa: plusminus 50 spp.; South Africa: 49 spp."
