Descripción

After recovering from its dehydrated state, this rotifer crawled for only a dozen minutes. It never showed the corona. And, having found nothing interesting for itself, it fell back into the contracted state.

The sample is taken from moss brought from the forest. The moss was stored at room temperature for three days before the observation.

Diagnosis of the organisms observed:
• body reniform, dorsal side convex, ventral side almost straight
• length 25–39 µm
• apical keel with ~6 ribs
• macronucleus with one, central nucleolus
• mouth opening with a right and left field of polykineties
• cilia of the left polykinetid are long, forming a “beard”
• contractile vacuole terminal
• two caudal cilia
• flexible cell
• crystalline granules are present in the cells, visible under polarised light
• feeding on bacteria
• the only ciliate species living in the specimen

Taphrocampa selenura Gosse, 1887

Diagnosis:
• caterpillar-like body
• body length ~270 µm
• trophi length ~40 µm
• the mastax is virgate with strongly asymmetric trophi
• toes length ~30 µm
• foot rudimentary, toes long, slender, tapering and decurved; they are wide apart at the base and form almost a semicircle when viewed dorsally or ventrally; their length is about one-ninth of total length
• a concertina-like integument
• dorsal epidermis is sticky with transverse folds and it is abundantly covered with adherent foreign particles
• auricles retractable
• retrocerebral organ with attached eyespot
• two small symmetrically placed dorsal antennas on the head
• at least one small antenna at the posterior end, above the toes
• it appears that there are lateral antennas (?)

Zoospores of the filamentous algae Oedogonium from our freshwater Town Pond. There was quite a bloom of this algae floating on the surface. I observed them emerging from this clear tubular structure. They measure 62.5 um. They emerged and swam around for a short while and then became stationary or exploded.

Oedogonium is a free-living, green algae that was first discovered by W. Hilse in the freshwater of Poland in 1860. It is a freshwater algae that are both planktonic and benthic in nature. It undergoes both sexual and asexual reproduction.
Asexual reproduction via zoospore is also very common and occurs in vegetative (benthic) cells.[19] Vegetative cells produce zoosporangia – the enclosure in which spores are formed – which give rise to the zoospores. Each zoospore has a small hyaline anterior region, and at the base of this region is a ring of flagella (~150). Once emerged from the zoosporangium, a zoospore is still enveloped by a fragile vesicle, from which it is soon discharged. Following dispersal, the zoospore experiences a short period of motility in which it searches for a substrate. When attached to a substrate, the ring of flagella is lost, and the zoospore begins dividing to form a new filament.
