NRS323 veg survey project. This tree was growing in a shaded understory of an upland forest habitat. It was around 12 feet tall and 6 feet wide. The leaves were large and turning a yellow-brown color. The bark was grey with pale lichens growing on it.
NRS323 veg survey project. This plant was growing on its own on the floor of an upland forest habitat. It’s around 4 inches tall and has light green leaves.
NRS 323 section 1
Large erect shrub found at the edge of a woody area. Leaves are broad and opposite and compound. Around 9-12 leaflets that are paired feather and compound. The exposed pith is white. No berries present at the time.
URI NRS 323 Section 1
This is the American white waterlily found at Tuckertown park in the wetland area. It is a floating aquatic herb that has a green notched leaf with a red underside. Typically it has showy white and sweet scented flowers. The leaves have a waxy surface and can grow up to eight inches across.
This tree was found at the woodlands edge of Tuckertown park. Three distinct leaf patterns; "egg, mitten and glove". Young twigs are green, the bark of the adult tree is considered alligator-skin. Some buds present on tree, some small saplings surrounding tree. Entire tree is aromatic, has a citrus smell when scraped or bruised.
URI NRS 323 Fall 22’ (Section 1) - This southern arrowwood was found along the trails at Tucker town park on the edge of a red maple swamp. The arrowwood is an understory shrub with opposite leaves that have 4-22 pairs of teeth. Leaves are lighter underneath and darker on top. Leaf bases are rounded or slightly heart shaped and the twigs are velvety hairy. I’m the summer, small white flowers bloom in a flat inflorescence.
NRS 323-Section 1-Fall 2022. Found along the Northwest corner of Tucker Pond in South Kingston, RI. At the time found, the plant was in about 2 - 3 inches of water. At its tallest point, the plant stood about 1 foot in height. Multiple stalks were emerging from one, central base. Each stalk had one, green, cordate-shaped leaf attached. Leaves were around 3 - 4 inches in length. One stalk had a group of flowers, in addition to a leaf. At this stalk, multiple flowers were found at the end-tip and were purple in color.
found in full sun and dry sandy soil, grew to about 3 inches, citrus smell
NRS 323-Section 1-Fall 2022. Found along the edge of Flagg Rd and the outer edge of North Woods, and stood about 4 feet in height. Identifying characteristics include large leaves with a leathery texture, 3 points, and a white underside with small hairs. Vines are woody with red color accents. Forking tendrils are seen opposite leaf nodes, as well as some growing fruit.
NRS-323 (section1) Found growing on the side of the road in dry habitat. Some key characteristics are the bark of tree is dark and chunky and resemble burnt potato chips. Also the underside of the leaf has orange/brown hairs along the midrib. The leaves are alternating and lightly toothed. There is some speckling on the twigs. Also when bark is scraped it smells like almond.
Found along Flagg Road around the fine arts center. Has a blue stem with prickles running along it. Has alternating, compound leaves with three leaflets. Has white flowers and black fruit.
NRS 323 Sec.1 Fall 2022 - The vines were growing up a long-dead tree, and at the very top of the vine growth, the tendrils were separating from the tree and growing yellow-whitish clusters of berries. A Smilax rotundifolia (green briar) vine was also climbing up the same trunk.
URI NRS 323 Fall 22’ (Section 1) - This red maple was found along Flagg Road across from the fine arts lot in a disturbed area with other trees and low woody growth around it. The tree was found in an area that is well lit and is also in an area where the soil is usually moist because the flatness of the area pools water during rainstorms. What made this tree stand out as a red maple is the characteristic red on top of each leaf’s petiole. Additionally, each stem has leaves that are composed of three points that are opposed to one another on the stem. Red maple leaves are also more pointed on their edges than that of other maple trees; which gives their leaves a toothy appearance. Since the bark is relatively dark grey and appears to be more on the rough side I concluded that this tree is a mature red maple as the bark is more worn than younger relatives of its kind.
Found in a woodland area as a ground cover or a vining plant. Has 5 palmate leaflets with toothed margins. Has a red joint where leaflets connect to petiole.
NRS 323 Section 1, Fall 2022.
It is growing out of a stone wall on Flagg road. Woodland vine that grows in shaded disturbed areas. Thick green stems with large thorns and tendrils with alternating glossy simple leaves.
NRS 323 - Section 1 - Fall 2022. Was found adjacent to a parking lot off Flagg Rd growing in front of a tree. About 6 ft tall with glossy leaves. Was located in a dry, partial sun habitat.
Often found along the upper edges of salt marshes
Bracts are shorter than the inflorescence
