we heard a strange screeching noise and followed it to this sun squirrel that was attacking something. It stopped with the noises but as we were taking pictures we realised it was eating a frog. I couldnt get a front shot but my husband might have so will try to upload these later. These are mine and you can see the frogs legs clearly in and out of frame

This is something we aren't used to. We were called out to a home about a snake hiding in a crack where stairs connect to the foundation. The original description was: black head and brownish body. Originally I thought herald snake but they said it was big. Upon seeing the head, I thought something was off. I just didn't know if the snake looked off because the family had poured chemicals into the hole. Finally got enough of the head out to think cobra. Us adults apparently have poor eyesight as the sun sets. My colleague's 12 year old gave my husband a more detailed description when we went to fetch him for backup. Then it went from cobra to rinkhals. Sure enough, after some digging, it came out and we were able to secure it. My husband has been doing snake rescue and release for more than 15 years in our little town - he's never had one. The family said they haven't been traveling anywhere and are unsure of the neighbors. From their accounts, it has been around for possibly a month as it's been seen before. They thought it was a cobra as it hooded. Will add better photos soon.

Found 26 October 2019 in swamp forest. Found a Bridelia micrantha twig on the ground with wood chips at the opening of a hole. The twig contained a caterpillar with strange posterior appendages. This caterpillar moved back into the hole, sealed off the opening and pupated. A few weeks later (before 27 Nov 2019) it hatched into the moth shown.

One of these days when golfers seriously got under my nose! And I'm one... Early morning sitting watching this pair and then just as they began interacting I had to move aside to let them through. What was interesting was how the one Malachite in fact stuck its bill into the other. There was a fight over the fingerling that had been caught. I just wish I could have got closer and focused without being disturbed. A few interesting maneuvers though!

This was one of those strange and unusual sights that you're not quite sure is taking place. A duck eating a fish!
It was a little before 9 o'clock, a December morning and here this yellow-billed duck suddenly had this decent sized fish in its mouth. For quite some time it attempted to get it nicely positioned to swallow it. Not so easy. It dropped it over and over which makes me think the fish had to already be dead. When the Yellow-billed duck mate came close it pretty much paid no attention yet the one with the fish tried frantically to swallow its catch. At that time, back in 2015, I did inquire from the birding fraternity around Jhb if they'd seen anything like this and apparently not! What type of fish I'm not sure.. maybe a bream..

Flew over me and went in hot pursuit of him to try get some photographs. Each time I got too close flew on to another tree... lugging a tripod and camera through creepers and bushes eventually got my chance. Grey-Go-away birds were making a racket and didn't let up, making quite sure his presence was well known to all. Interesting is we have a large number of wild bee hives around at the moment and wasp nests and have read the Honey buzzard preferred diet is wasp and bees.

While loosening a tree tag on an A. karroo, a flash of orange caught my eye so removed the tag completely to see what it was.. The tiniest frog no more than 3 cm was holding on to the bark with its orangy red stubby suckers/toes. It blended in perfectly against the bark. Then as it began trying to escape the bright orange flash on the inner side of the limbs as it crawled rapidly up the trunk was noticeable. As it became motionless it was impossible to see. The overall colour was non descript. Is this a young painted reed frog or a subspecies?

This was a fascinating observation. The Pied Starlings heard the European Starling babies begging in the nest. The social imperative in the Pieds is so strong, that they started bringing food for the Euros.

Pied Starlings have such incredibly close clan bonds, and it's so sweet to see how they look after each other and never fight about food. All members of the clan feed the children (parents can have up to 7 helpers), but I didn't realise that the begging calls of another species could set off their clan instincts like this!

I don't recall if I saw the Pieds actually feed the Euro babies, but they did keep bringing food and sitting next to the nest.
