Practiced flying around garden one day after emerging from its cocoon. Landed on a clump of Stipa cernua and eventually after several hours was able to crawl onto a verbena lilacina, where a territorial gulf fritillary attempted to push it out. He didn’t fly away, but moved into a narrow leaf milkweed plant that was sticking out of the verbena. As the temperature warmed into the 70s, he was able to fly into a Palo Verde tree and rest in the sun. He was seen visiting a toyon, elderberry and then headed south west!

Emerged from the cocoon today!! Male. Hanging in a Fragrant Pitcher Sage. Was able to climb to the top of the Sage by nightfall and rested there. There was a large spider web attached to the bush. Knocked out the web to protect butterfly.
