Definitely not who I was expecting to find at the end of my rod! Beautiful young lake sturgeon (2 ~ 2.5 feet in length) that I accidentally hauled up by the tail. Was able to unhook him quickly and without having him out of the water for too long. Swam off as soon as I resubmerged him, so I assume he was without major injury. Safe travels, little dude!

Text of my memo from Wild River State Park regarding the provenance of this tooth: "A tooth brought in by two park visitors on July 31, 1992 has been identified by Dr. Robert Bright of the Bell Museum of Natural History as the first lower molar of a bison. The tooth, which was hard enough that it couldn't be scratched with a stainless steel knife blade, appeared to be fossilized, but Dr. Bright says that bison teeth are always very hard, and that his guess is that the tooth is historical.

The tooth measures almost 2 by 3 inches, excluding the roots. According to Dr. Bright, the tooth had barely erupted at the time the bison died, so it was from a young animal.

The tooth was found embedded in the bank of the St. Croix River in the vicinity of [Exact location redacted.] The finders brought it to the interpretive center for identification, and donated it to the park at my request."
