As soon as the native coastal vegetation of Punakaiki meets the road bank, the plant species switch from almost wholly native to mostly naturalised (here we see clovers, Conyza, and thistles, among others). These weedy newcomers thrive in the disturbed ground of roadsides and are also moved about on cars and roadside machinery.
This observation is referencing the species in box 1 of the photo.
In our groups 10m by 10m square plot it was awesome to see massive nikau palms that almost looked out of place and belonged on a tropical island. Because of the shade cover they provide only saw few other species that must have adapted to the conditions.

Many kanono plants in Spragg Bush dead, dying or distressed.
a dozen or so tussocks, in seed, spreading in earthquake liquefaction silt and neglected path cracks; dug out and disposed of. Apparently brought in by nursery trade some few years ago and used in landscaping.
Self-sown in my garden - seen occasionally locally as a garden escape. The photos in the Field Guide are not an exact match with my photos but there may be a range of variants.
