At the base of a tree, near the Mystic River
Embedded in the mud and pebble of the Zostera bed here, this is the only dive site in Cape Ann where I have observed this species in shallow water

Location Found: Canoe Beach, Nahant MA
Habitat Found: Water of reduced salinity, intertidally to subtidally, in depths up to 12 m
Physical Description: The shape of the common oyster is extremely variable; it is influenced by the medium on which the oyster grows and the surrounding location.
Fun Fact: Large oysters can release up to 100 million eggs per spawn, and they may spawn several times a year.

Common Name: Eastern Oyster
Scientific Name: Crassostrea virgincea
Location found: Canoe Beach, In a deep tide pool.
Habitat type: In the intertidal down to 40ft attached to rocks. Found from the Gulf of St Lawrence to the Gulf of Mexico.
Physical description: Extremely variable and irregular shell that fits to where it is growing. They are thin where the hinge is and increase in width up the shell. They can grow to be 10 inches long.
Fun fact: This oyster is the main species that is eaten in the US.
