Description

King Gustavs Sceptre

Over, but in fruit.

This spectacular member of the family is in a genus characterized (well in half the species) by having evolved a flat leaf from its divided state, and thus has forgotten how to make net veins, making parallel veins instead: hence Para- besides and nomus - the custom: so unusual or abnormal.
In forms with both leaf types (the Elongate Sceptres) the divided leaf is the juvenile one, found on young plants until they flower, and in younger plants when new branches form, whereas the flat leaf is produced on flowering branches towards the tips. On mature plants all the divided leaves may have been lost, so that old plants sometimes only contain mature leaves.

Why two leaf types? Dunno, but my theory is that small plants growing in the vegetation need to shed heat (OK, perhaps they need to transpire more, or are more likely to be eaten (eating lots of points takes longer than a big flat blade)), but for these plants that grow above the vegetation (unlike the related genus Serruria - the Spiderheads - that stay in the undergrowth) they are better off with big flat blades. And so the parts above the general vegetation tend to have the flat leaves.

And yes, most of the bigger Sceptres have flat leaves ... Well if you ignore the Cedarberg - lets say that in the wetter mountains all the big species hve flat leaves ... but then P. roodebergensis and P. spathulatus are on the driest slopes of these mountains ... ah well: it is a nice theory.

King-Gustavs Sceptre

A very low altitude population: would never have expected them to be here and in such abundance. Normally they are in the mist zone or just below.

Some die off (up to 10% locally), but there are several patches without any obvious deaths.

Excellent recruitment - dozens of plants - in the burned area above the firebelt.
