On remnant dolomite prairie. Bright yellow pollen and slightly pubescent rays all >5mm wide. As far as I’m aware this is the first time someone has recognized E. simulata as what it is in Wisconsin, but obviously it has been here for thousands of years. E. simulata is much more widespread than previously thought; see for example the recent discovery that it is present at Harlem Hills prairie in Rockland, IL. The distributions of this and real E. pallida need a lot of work.
Sounds like a pharaoh cicada? There’s only 3-4 that I can hear. Not sure if it could be a frog instead?
5 inches tall. 1/2 inch flowers. No stem leaves. Stem continues above flowers.
Wright's Fishhook Cactus (Mammillaria wrightii) -- I think.
Growing naturally (not cultivated) in pinyon-juniper woodland at Quarai, Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument, Torrance Co., New Mexico, USA.
