Saw this pileated woodpecker while driving in Mount Holly. It was working on drilling a hole. Cloudy and snowy out, right around freezing.
Given the drooping behavior of the branches of this specimen, I am inclined to believe this may be a willow.
Narrow leaves with pinnate venation. Abaxial surface of leaves are white/grey but not due to the presence of hairs. Leaf attachment is alternate (but strictly in the sense that the leaves at subsequent nodes are attached at the opposite side of the branch). Rough, rutted bark on the main axis. Bark on branches is more smooth.
This specimen was found at the edge of an overgrown mesic field, just off of a road.
Can anyone tell me which tree this is behind my house? I know it is a type of oak!
