Cormorants fishing off the USS Barry. This Navy Destroyer has been on display in DC since the early 1980s, but it will be towed away in the next few months as a new bridge is being built that is too low (and not a drawbridge) to allow the Barry to pass underneath it if needed. Barry was deployed during the Cuban Missile Crisis, to Vietnam and the Suez Canal, among other places. Turbulent times compared to the ship's current peaceful setting! I wonder how many species of cormorants have fished under her hull.

I think their wings are antennae that they use to get in touch with the mother ship.
I found this growing in a marsh along the Patuxent River at the Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary in Lothian, Maryland.
