CATHIE AIME
[The ballooning is] called a telium. (Telia are one of the 4 different sorus types that are produced by rust fungi). This type of really large, gelatinous, orange telium is really just seen in Gymnosporangium species (although a few other rust genera can also produce gelatinous and/or orange telia, they are much smaller and don’t swell up like this in the presence of water). Some Gymnosporangiums produce even more elaborate telia. Google G. clavariiforme or G. juniperi-virginianae for instance…

ROGER PETERSON
Known as quince rust but it infects nearly all members of the apple tribe as well as juniper.
"gelatinization." Nearly all species of Gymnosporangium have teliospore pedicels that swell greatly in water.
