Dry, scaly, rose-pink cap with radial yellowish pores; near larch. Cap: 3-10" (7.5-25 cm) wide; convex, becoming flat, with incurved margin typically adorned with veil fragments; dry, uneven to pitted, with dense, fibrous scales; rose-red to pinkish, sometimes yellowish near margin. Flesh yellowish, pink beneath cuticle; may bruise bluish. Taste somewhat bitter. Tubes: attached to or descending stalk, shallow; yellow, ochre, or brown. Pores elongated, angular, radially arranged. Stalk: 1-2" (2.5-5 cm) long, 3/8-1 1/4" (1-3 cm) thick, flaring at tip; solid, with netlike pattern; yellowish, sometimes red at often swollen base. Veil: partial veil thin, membranous, whitish to yellowish, leaving remnants along cap margin and evanescent ring. Spores: 7.5-9.5 x 2.5-3.2 u; elliptical. Spore print reddish-brown.
